چکیده

example in the special issues on biotech in China, Russia and Singapore [4–6]), several aspects of antibodies as therapeutics are addressed in this issue of BTJ. Ruuls et al. review a new class of antibody therapeutics: the age of the Umabs [7]. Zhou et al. review modern production technologies [8] and Garidel et al. report on a rapid, sensitive and economical assessment of monoclonal antibody conformational stability by intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence spectroscopy [9]. These three papers are a good attempt to get quick insights into the challenge of antibody processing.

Medical molecular farming: production of antibodies, biopharmaceuticals and edible vaccines in plants.

The use of plants for medicinal purposes dates back thousands of years but genetic engineering of plants to produce desired biopharmaceuticals is much more recent. As the demand for biopharmaceuticals is expected to increase, it would be wise to ensure that they will be available in significantly larger amounts, on a cost-effective basis. Currently, the cost of biopharmaceuticals limits their a...

Biotherapies: are they just like any other drugs?

"Biotherapies" include both biopharmaceuticals and cell and gene therapies. Biopharmaceuticals are macromolecules created by biotechnologies. In the case of monoclonal antibodies, the starting dose to be given to Humans is difficult to select because there may be no relevant animal model. At the time of registration, the knowledge of the mechanism of action of monoclonal antibodies is insuffici...

Clinical testing for neutralizing antibodies to interferon-β in multiple sclerosis

Biopharmaceuticals are drugs which are based on naturally occurring proteins (antibodies, receptors, cytokines, enzymes, toxins), nucleic acids (DNA, RNA) or attenuated microorganisms. Immunogenicity of these agents has been commonly described and refers to a specific antidrug antibody response. Such immunogenicity represents a major factor impairing the efficacy of biopharmaceuticals due to bi...

Biopharmaceuticals: an overview

Biopharmaceuticals drugs structurally mimics compounds found within the body and are produced using biotechnologies. These have the potential to cure diseases rather than merely treat symptoms, and have fewer side effects because of their specificity, for example, cytokines, enzymes, hormones, clotting factors, vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, cell therapies, antisense drugs, and peptide therap...

Clinical Aspects of Immunogenicity to Biopharmaceuticals

The range of biopharmaceuticals available is steadily increasing. The first generation of products were copies of naturally occurring growth factors, or hormones or cytokines. With the development of new techniques, such as pegylation and glycosylation, second-generation biopharmaceuticals with increased bioavailability and higher therapeutic index are available. Most biopharmaceuticals induce ...
